AI clothes changer

Changing clothing in a photo with AI — how virtual try-on works, where it fails, and the consent rules that apply to editing images of people.

Last verified 2026-08-26

Clothes-changing tools replace the garments in a photograph while keeping the person, pose and setting. The commercial version of this is virtual try-on, used heavily in fashion e-commerce.

What the model has to solve

Harder than it appears, because the garment has to obey the body underneath:

Getting usable results

  1. Start with a clean full-body shot. Even lighting, plain background, arms clear of the torso.
  2. Prefer a neutral standing pose. Complex poses multiply the fit problem.
  3. Use a flat garment image where the tool accepts a reference — a clear product shot on white beats a photo of someone else wearing it.
  4. Check the boundaries at full size. Neckline, cuffs and hem are where failures show.
  5. Expect several attempts. This is a select-from-batch workflow, not a one-shot one.

Known failure modes

SymptomCause
Garment floats or looks pasted onDrape not matched to pose; try a simpler stance
Hands or hair vanish under fabricOcclusion failure; use a shot with limbs clear of the torso
Pattern warps or repeats wronglyComplex prints are unreliable; solids work far better
Colour looks offScene lighting not applied to the new garment

Consent is not optional here. Editing clothing on a photograph of a real person without permission is a serious matter, and generating any depiction of a person in a state of undress they did not consent to is illegal in many jurisdictions and prohibited by every mainstream provider. Use images you own, of people who have agreed.

Common questions

What photo works best?

Full body, even lighting, plain background, neutral standing pose, arms clear of the torso. Input quality dominates the result.

Why does the clothing look pasted on?

The drape has not been matched to the pose. Simpler poses and simpler garments produce noticeably better results.

Can I use a photo of someone else?

Only with their permission. Editing clothing on someone without consent is prohibited by providers and unlawful in many places.
