AI image upscaler
What AI upscaling can and cannot recover, when to use it, and why it is the last step in a pipeline rather than a rescue for a bad image.
Upscaling increases an image's resolution. AI upscaling does it by inventing plausible detail rather than by interpolating between existing pixels, which is why it looks better than a plain resize — and why it can be confidently wrong.
Invented, not recovered
This distinction matters more than any setting. The detail an AI upscaler adds was never in the original. On texture — fabric, foliage, skin pores, stone — invention is indistinguishable from recovery and the result is excellent. On information that carries meaning, it fabricates:
- Faces at small sizes gain features that were never there. The result is a plausible person who is not quite the original.
- Text becomes confidently wrong letterforms.
- Logos and marks get subtly redrawn.
- Fine patterns can regularise into something cleaner than reality.
Never upscale an image being used as evidence, identification, or a faithful record.
When it works well
- Enlarging generated images for print or large display — the content is synthetic anyway.
- Rescuing older low-resolution photography where mood matters more than forensic accuracy.
- Preparing web-resolution assets for a bigger placement.
- Final delivery after all creative decisions are locked.
Where it belongs in the pipeline
Last. Always last. Generate at native resolution, make every creative decision, then upscale once at the end. Upscaling early means every later step processes invented detail, which compounds artefacts and costs more per run for no benefit.
A useful sanity check: view the result at 100% and compare a detail region against the original. If the upscaler changed what something is rather than how sharp it looks, reduce the strength or accept the lower resolution.
Common questions
Can upscaling recover a blurry photo?
It can produce a sharper-looking image, but the detail is invented rather than recovered. Fine for mood, unsuitable where accuracy matters.
How much can I upscale?
Factors of two to four usually hold up. Beyond that the output is mostly invention and starts looking artificial.
Should I upscale before or after editing?
After. Upscale once, at the end, when every creative decision is settled.
