Editing photographs by instruction rather than by tool — what generative editing does well, where traditional editing still wins, and how to combine them.
Generative photo editing changes an image from a description — "remove the car", "make it overcast" — instead of from selections and adjustment layers. It is a different discipline from traditional editing, with a different set of things it is good at.
Generative versus traditional

The productive combination is generative for content changes and traditional for tonal ones — remove the object generatively, grade the result conventionally.
Writing an edit instruction
- Name the target unambiguously. "The blue car on the left", not "the car".
- State the change, not the goal. "Replace the sky with overcast cloud" beats "make it look moodier".
- Say what must not change when it is at risk — "keep the subject's face and pose unchanged".
- One change per pass. Sequential single edits are far more predictable than one stacked instruction.
What to check afterwards
Generative edits fail in characteristic places, so inspect in this order: edges around the edited region, shadows (a removed object often leaves its shadow), reflections in glass and water, and repeated texture where a fill has tiled. Any of these at full resolution means another pass.

Common questions
Can generative editing replace Photoshop?
Not entirely. It is better at content changes — removing, replacing, extending. Traditional editing remains better for precise tonal and colour work.
Why did the shadow stay after I removed an object?
The instruction named the object, not its shadow. Name both, or run a second pass on the shadow.
Can I make multiple edits at once?
You can, but stacked instructions interfere. Sequential single edits give more predictable results.
