# AI drawing and illustration

Generating illustration, line art and stylised drawing with AI — how it differs from photorealistic prompting and how to hold a consistent style.

Drawing and illustration behave differently from photorealistic generation. The vocabulary that produces a convincing photograph produces a muddled illustration, and vice versa.

## Name the medium, not the mood

Photographic prompts lean on lighting and lens. Illustration prompts lean on **medium and mark-making**:

  - **Medium** — ink line art, watercolour, gouache, marker, charcoal, vector flat, cel-shaded.
  - **Line quality** — clean uniform line, rough sketch, heavy outline, no outline.
  - **Colour approach** — flat colour, limited palette, halftone, monochrome with one accent.
  - **Level of finish** — rough thumbnail, tight sketch, fully rendered.

"Beautiful illustration" gives the model nothing to act on. "Clean ink line art, flat two-colour fill, heavy outline, white background" gives it four decisions.

## Holding a consistent style across a set

The hardest part of illustration work is making twenty images look like one project. Three things that help:

  - **Fix a style sentence and never edit it.** Keep an identical style clause across every prompt; change only the subject.
  - **Use a reference.** Feeding a finished piece back through [image-to-image](/image-to-image/) anchors the look far better than describing it.
  - **Lock the seed where you can.** A fixed seed with varying subjects holds the rendering more consistently than random ones.

## What illustration models still handle badly

  - **Consistent characters across images** — the same character described twice will not be the same character.
  - **Precise geometry** — technical diagrams, accurate perspective grids, exact symmetry.
  - **Text inside artwork** — speech bubbles and titles are best added afterwards.
  - **Sequential panels** — comics require character consistency the models do not yet reliably provide.

For flat vector-style work, generate the look then trace or rebuild in a vector editor; models output raster, so anything needing true scalability wants that extra pass.

## Common questions

### Can AI produce line art suitable for colouring?

Yes — ask explicitly for clean black line art on white with no shading. Being explicit about no shading matters, as models tend to add it.

### How do I keep the same character across several drawings?

Difficult by prompt alone. Use a reference image through image-to-image and keep an identical style clause; expect to select from several attempts.

### Can I get vector files?

Not directly — output is raster. Generate the look, then trace it in a vector editor if you need scalability.
